Philosophy
비물질성 & 장소성
15년간의 작업은 한국건축의 인자로서 한옥의 물성, 일제강점기 새로운 재료와 구법에 대한 보존, 켜켜이 쌓인 시간과 삶의 흔적을 담는 공간을 만들고자 노력해 왔다.
폭넓은 스펙트럼에서 다양한 축적물을 만들어 왔다고 자평하지만, 보다 비판적 시각을 갖고 향후의 15년을 나아가고자 한다.
immateriality & spatial identity
With 15 years of experience in the field of Korean traditional architecture, I have focused on the materiality of Hanok and conducted thorough studies on preservation techniques and construction methods used during the Japanese colonial period. In my work, I have placed strong emphasis on acknowledging the layers of time and the traces embedded in space.
I consider myself an architect who has built within a broad spectrum of design. However, I have become more skeptical of my past work, and I aim to spend the next 15 years further developing and deepening my architectural practice.
무형의 가치를 그리는 건축
보이는 것에 천착하던 시기를 지나, 이제는 보이지 않는 것을 설계하고 싶다.
한옥은 형태보다 정신이었고, 공간의 위계, 빛을 드리우는 방식, 땅을 다루는 자세, 채와 채 간의 시선처리, 마당의 다양한 역할, 주변환경을 다스리는 질서를 중요시한다.
일제강점기를 지나 우리 선배 건축가들이 만들어낸 건축은 그들의 창의적인 조형의 아이디어와 비물리적 가치의 보존을 더욱 중요시해야 한다. 보존해야 할 대상이 재료와 구조에서 삶의 기억, 시대의 사고방식, 사회적 가치, 비물질적 가치로 바뀌었다.
현대건축의 창조는 물질보다 감각을, 조형보다 분위기를, 그리고 무엇보다 장소의 지역성과 주변과의 관계 속에서 태어나는 맥락을 중시하고자 한다.
앞으로의 15년은, 비물질의 건축을 향한 조용한 시도이자, 시간과 공간, 사람과 환경 사이의 보이지 않는 결을 짓는 작업이 될 것이다.
Designing architecture through invisible values
I want to build what is unseen, passing through time, based on my study of what can be seen.
Hanok has a more spiritual aspect than just its design or shape; it embodies the hierarchy of space, direction of sunlight, construction on the earth, views between rooms, function of the courtyard, and the harmony of the atmosphere within the space.
It is important to preserve the creative ideas of forming and the immaterial values studied by experienced architects who worked after the Japanese colonial period. Preservation needs to be carried out for the memories of lives, the mindset of the era, social values, and immaterial values beyond the concept of physical materials.
Contemporary architectural creation tends to focus more on the sensory experience rather than physical materials, emphasizing mood over form, and especially concentrating on the local identity of the area, and the context built through relationships within the neighborhood.
For the next 15 years, I will attempt to create the immaterial aspects of architecture, explore the concepts of time and space, and study the connection between humans and the atmosphere in my work.
